Ha Giang Loop 5 Days Itinerary: The Slow Travel Version

Ha Giang Loop 5 Days Itinerary: The Slow Travel Version

28 Sep - 2026

A Ha Giang loop 5 days itinerary is for people who have read the three-day and four-day plans and noticed the same thing in both: the word quick. A quick stop at the palace. A quick look at the flag tower. A quick lunch before the pass. Five days removes the word. Every day is shorter, every stop is longer, and the places most riders only see from the road, Pho Bang, Nam Dam, the Nho Que by boat, get the hours they deserve.

This is the itinerary we build when guests ask for the slow version of the loop. It follows the direction of our tours, east first through Thai An and Du Gia, then north to Dong Van and back through Quan Ba, and it can be ridden self-drive or with an easy rider.

Who a Ha Giang loop 5 days itinerary is for

  • Photographers who want to be at the right place at the right light instead of at noon.
  • Riders on a second visit who did the classic loop and want the corners they missed.
  • Couples and families who would rather ride three hours a day than six.
  • Anyone visiting in October and November, when the buckwheat fields are in flower and every extra hour on the plateau is worth having.

If you are still deciding how long to go for, our guide on how many days the loop needs and the three days vs four days comparison cover the shorter options.

Day 1: Ha Giang city to Du Gia (about 120 km)

The same first day as our standard loops, and the one nobody wants shortened. Out of the city by half past eight, up Thai An Pass with the blue river below, lunch in a streamside village, then the long green run through Duong Thuong and Lung Ho valleys to Du Gia. Arrive with daylight to spare, swim under Du Gia waterfall, and eat with the homestay family. With five days you do not have to leave the pool at four.

Day 2: Du Gia to Meo Vac (about 80 km)

Here the slow version parts ways with the standard one. Instead of riding through to Dong Van, stop at Meo Vac. Morning through Ngam La and the stream at Ngoc Long, lunch at Mau Due, then over the M Pass into Meo Vac by early afternoon. That leaves time for the thing four-day riders always wish they had done: the Nho Que river boat trip through Tu San canyon, taken from the Meo Vac side in the late afternoon light. Sleep in Meo Vac town. If your dates land on a Sunday, the morning market is one of the biggest on the plateau.

Day 3: Meo Vac to Dong Van via Ma Pi Leng and Lung Cu (about 80 km)

The short distance hides the biggest day. Ride Ma Pi Leng Pass in the morning, from Meo Vac toward Dong Van, which puts the canyon on your right and the sun behind you. Stop at the main viewpoint, then take the Skywalk path along the cliff, which nobody has time for on a tight schedule. Lunch in Dong Van, then the afternoon run north to Lung Cu Flag Tower and the Lo Lo village below it, and back to Dong Van for the evening in the old quarter. On our four-day tour this is two half-days squeezed into different days. Here it is one calm day with a long lunch.

Day 4: Dong Van to Yen Minh via Sa Phin, Sung La and Pho Bang (about 70 km)

The day of small places. Leave Dong Van after a slow breakfast and ride the karst plateau road west. First stop is the Vuong Family Palace at Sa Phin, the Hmong king’s mansion, which deserves an hour rather than a photo from the gate. Next the Sung La valley and Lung Cam village, where Pao’s House is. Then the detour almost nobody takes: the side road to Pho Bang, the old border town with clay houses and rose fields, about two hours including the walk. Down Tham Ma Pass in the afternoon light and into Yen Minh for the night. This is a seventy-kilometre day that fills itself without any rushing.

Day four ends with a descent like this one, a ribbon of bends seen from the viewpoint above.

Day 5: Yen Minh to Ha Giang city via Nam Dam and Quan Ba (about 100 km)

The homeward day, with a bath in the middle. Through the Yen Minh pine forest, a visit to Lung Khuy Cave, then Tam Son for lunch. Instead of riding straight on, turn up to Nam Dam village, the Dao Cham community above the town, for a herbal leaf bath in a wooden tub. It is the best thing you can do for your shoulders on the last day of a loop. Then Quan Ba Heaven Gate for the farewell view over the Twin Mountains, the descent of Bac Sum Pass, and the river road into Ha Giang city by late afternoon. The limousine to Hanoi leaves at a quarter past four, so tell us if you need to be on it and we will time the bath accordingly.

5Yen Minh, Lung Khuy, Tam Son, Nam Dam, Heaven Gate, Bac Sum, Ha Giangabout 100 kmHerbal bath in Nam Dam

Around 450 kilometres in total, with no day over four hours of riding. Compare that with the 440 kilometres of our four-day loop and you see the point: the distance is nearly the same, the time in the saddle per day is not.

What five days gives you that four does not

  • The Nho Que by boat. Most four-day riders see the canyon only from the pass above.
  • Ma Pi Leng in the morning, with the Skywalk on foot, rather than in the afternoon on the way to a homestay.
  • Inside the Vuong Palace instead of a photo from the road.
  • Pho Bang. The one stop that is off every standard itinerary.
  • A night in Meo Vac, which four-day loops usually pass through at lunchtime.
  • The Nam Dam bath on the last day, when it matters most.

What five days costs you is one more night, one more day of homestay meals, and one more day away from wherever you are heading next. For most of the people who ask us, that trade is easy.

How to book the Ha Giang loop 5 days version

We run this as a custom itinerary built on our 4 days 3 nights tour, with the extra night and the added stops planned around your dates and your group. Self-drive, easy rider and seat-behind-a-friend all work, and the pace suits mixed groups where not everyone rides. Message us with your dates and we will send a day-by-day plan and a quote. The full picture of the region is in our Ha Giang Loop guide, and the plateau itself is a UNESCO Global Geopark, which is a good reason on its own to give it five days.

Tips for a five-day loop

  • Pack for two climates. Du Gia is warm and low; Dong Van and Lung Cu are high and cold in the mornings. Our packing list covers both.
  • Book the boat and the bath ahead. Both are easy to arrange the day before through your guide or homestay, and both fill up in peak season.
  • Keep the itinerary loose. The point of five days is having an hour to give away. If a market appears or the fog lifts on a pass, stop.
  • Cash. ATMs are in Ha Giang city, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. The small places in between take cash only.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Ha Giang loop 5 days itinerary worth it?

Yes, if you want the places between the famous stops. Five days adds the Nho Que boat trip, the inside of the Vuong Palace, the Pho Bang detour, a night in Meo Vac and the Nam Dam herbal bath, with no day over four hours of riding.

How many kilometres is the five-day loop?

Around 450 kilometres, close to the 440 of the four-day loop. The difference is the daily distance: about 70 to 120 kilometres a day instead of 100 to 120, with more time at every stop.

Which direction does the five-day itinerary go?

Anticlockwise the Mr. Biu way: east first through Thai An and Du Gia, north to Meo Vac and Dong Van, then west and south through Yen Minh and Quan Ba back to Ha Giang city.

Can I do five days with an easy rider?

Yes. The pace suits easy rider guests well, and mixed groups where some people ride and some sit behind a driver work fine on this plan.

What does the five-day tour cost?

It is a custom itinerary built on our four-day tour, so the price depends on your dates, group size and riding option. Send us your dates and we will quote it day by day.

When is the best time for a five-day loop?

October and November for buckwheat flowers and clear skies, or March to May for warm days and green fields. The slow pace also makes winter fog less of a problem, because you can wait for it to lift.
